Review
First Impressions:
I found the Prism Naked Palette on sale at the drugstore, and it was the last one on sale for only $5.00, (regularly I believe it sells for $10.00). With more than fifty percent off the original price, I couldn't turn down that deal. Prior to this, I was on the fence about buying the Prism Palette, because it only has shimmery shades and no matte shades. I don't like using only shimmery shades on my eyes, I like to have a matte shade or two to use as a base and for blending. However, for $5.00 I thought I would give it a try.
Packaging vs. Actual Shades: The picture on the packaging shows six shimmery shades, two lighter shades on the left, two medium shades in the middle and two darker shades on the right (that are a variety of dark brown tones). When I first opened this palette, I was surprised to see the three darker shades (on the right of the palette) are much lighter than they appear to be on the box. They are beautiful shades, but on first glance no where near the dark colours they appear to be on the box. I understand that products may not look exactly the same on the packaging as they do in person, but in my palette there was a significant difference in the two. At one point, I thought perhaps there had been a mix up in the manufacturing process and my palette had mistakenly been given three of the same shades. However, after a closer inspection and once I had a look online, I found other people had the same first impressions as well, so I was comforted in knowing it wasn't my eyes playing tricks on me, it was the palette. |
Swatches and Wear:
According to E.L.F. Cosmetics website, you can apply the eye shadows dry for "a subtle wash of colour" or "wet for a vibrant effect". So, I applied the shadows both ways to see any difference in their applications.
*****
Dry Application:
Each shadow felt very smooth and creamy on the first touch, and they didn't feel like a powder at all. The two lightest shades, on the left hand side of the palette, applied a bit sheer on my skin and needed an extra application to build up the pigmentation, but were still lovely colours. When I did the swatches for the four remaining shades, they were beautiful as well and didn't needed more than one swipe to transfer a nice amount of colour. Also, once I did swatches on my arm, I was finally able to see the difference in the tones of the three darker brown shades. Also, they all applied very well with brushes, even though there was a bit of fallout on the pan and on my face, but nothing overly messy.
With the dry application of the eye shadows, you can see there is a lot of shimmer and sparkle. The darker shades, in particular, held up well on my eyes throughout the day. Now they didn't last all day for me, but at least a couple of hours before they started to fade.
*****
Wet Application:
OMG, the wet application of these shadows is amazing. They completely transform into these bright, vibrant colourful shades that look amazing in artificial light (indoors), but look even better when the natural light hits them (outside under the sun). When wet these shades just pop on the eyes and can create multiple effects; like a simple but great pop of colour on the eyelid, the perfect highlight in the inner corner of the eyes or for a brow highlight and even a dramatic smokey look. Applying the shades wet, with either a bit of water on a brush or finger tip, is by far my favorite way to use this palette.
*****
Yay or Nay?
Originally, I was on the fence about this palette, mainly because of the lack of matte shades. However, these six shimmery shades have won my heart. Even though there is a significant difference in the appearance of the darker shades on the box compared to the actual products, they still rank as one of my favorite E.L.F. eye shadows.
They are exactly as described on the E.L.F. website and packaging; creamy, smooth, easy to blend and great for everyday to bold looks. Personally, I think this palette would work well for many skin tones. The shades are really nice to work with and can be built up (through both dry and wet applications) for more vibrant and vivid looks, day or night.
*****
My only complaint is that since there are no matte shades in this palette, I find it hard to create a complete look with shimmery shades alone. This is not an all-in-one, don't need to grab anything else, type of palette (at least for me). I always have to grab another palette or single eye shadow, to use that matte shade as a base or for blending. That is just my personal preference, but that doesn't mean everyone feels the same way or needs a matte colour on the eyes. It just comes down to what you prefer or the look you are going for.
So, the E.L.F. Prism Eye Shadow Palette in Naked is a definite YAY for me!
