The Walt Disney Company launched its new video on demand streaming service this morning, following four-years of intense planning and marketing. Now in direct competition with streaming staples like Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime and Apple TV, Disney Plus is sure to make an impact on the ever growing streaming industry. Disney Plus offers viewers access to a variety of movies and televisions shows from their catalogs, plus those of Pixar, Marvel, Fox and National Geographic. Over the last few years the Walt Disney Company has been slowly removing their content from other streaming services, in addition to sparing no expense acquiring Hulu and 21st-Century-Fox, in order to add exclusive content to their own streaming app. Now, that we have had our first look at what Disney Plus has to offer, let's take a closer to see if it is worth your money. COST Just in time for the holiday season Disney Plus launched at a costs $8.99/month or $89.99/year in Canada. With their single subscription plan, subscribers have unlimited access to their entire vault, in addition to being able to watch on a variety of electronic devices, have multiple viewers at one time, offer offline viewing options and have the ability to stream in 4K HDR.
WHAT YOU GET Disney Plus is available to stream a number of different ways. Similar to their competitors, Disney Plus allows viewers to stream on TVs, computers, tablets, both iPhone and Android phones and media boxes (Apple TV, Googles Chromcast, Roku devices, iOS, Android devices, PS4 and Xbox Ones).
Disney Plus also offer exclusive access to Star Wars movies and television shows, on top of recent Marvel films (like Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel). Outside of Disney content, Canadian viewers have access to National Geographic's on demand shows, as well as all 30 seasons of The Simpsons.
WORTH IT? For families and Disney fans a like, Disney Plus is a must. Access to the entire Disney vault, on top of the competitive price of $8.99/month, is in my opinion great value for your money. Also, going forward I can only see the app getting bigger and better, so investing now might save you money down the line, if they do decide to increase the subscription price. Now for everyone else looking for content outside Disney's reach, you might want to hold off. While the Walt Disney Company is trying to add a variety of programming to appeal to viewers beyond Disney, it just isn't there yet. For now, Netflix still reigns supreme for their available catalogs and original content, so in that regard they would be the better option. That's not to say Disney Plus won't eventually be comparable with Netflix, its just going to take some time and a lot of purchasing power on Disney's part. So stay tuned, while it might not be right for you now, Disney has big plans for their streaming and on-demand service, so keep an eye out.
