Review
First Impressions: Lets start at the beginning with the packaging of the box. This is pretty much your standard E.L.F. design, but with a twist. The layout of the packaging is the same, however they have chosen to change from their standard black/white to blue/white packaging for the Aqua Beauty line. I like the change, and I think the blue/white design really helps to differentiate between their normal line and the Aqua Beauty line. ***** Also, I really like their decision to package these eye shadows in a tube with a wand, rather than a pot. All around it makes it less messy, easier to apply with the wand, and to pack in my bag for travel. ***** |
Now, E.L.F. promotes these liquid eye shadows as having a vibrant and metallic finish. Looking at the product in the bottle, I would more or less agree with that statement. However, once I swatched the product on my hand, it had more of a shimmery and iridescent look rather than metallic. As well, once I blended out the shadow with my finger, the pigment mostly disappeared and all I was left with was a faint pink shimmer.

Wear:
According to the E.L.F. website, they say you can wear the liquid eyes shadow alone on the eyelids or as a primer for powder shadows. So, naturally I decided to this shadow both ways.
*****
Alone:
As I wanted to try this product on its own, I did not apply any sort of primer or base to my eyelids beforehand. On its own, the shadow applied like a normal liquid eye shadow would, wet but not runny. The wand transferred a nice amount of product in one to two swipes, and it looked really pigmented. Now, because it is a liquid eye shadow, I had to move quickly to blend and adjust the product before it dried. I found using my finger tip to blend out the product the best way, as when I used a blending brush too much of the product transferred to the brush and I had to reapply more of the eye shadow to get the pigmentation back. The eye shadow dried down with a few minutes, and so long as I did not overly blend out the product the rose colour remained apparent and beautiful.
For the price, I am definitely surprised how well this liquid eye shadow worked on its own.

Now just like when I first swatched the eye shadow on my hand, it did not appear metallic on my eyelids. Once again, it appeared shimmery and left an iridescent look, more sheer looking and not what I would describe as metallic.
On my first inspection of my eyelids, everything looked nice and there was just a bit of creasing, but nothing terrible. It did last for a couple of hours, but by the early afternoon I began to notice the product starting to fade. So, as a stand alone eye shadow, do not expect this to last for a long time, unless perhaps you use an eye shadow primer beforehand, or a finishing spray afterwards.

As A Primer:
Once again, I did not apply anything to my eyelids prior to applying this eye shadow. I applied it directly to my eyelids, waited a few minutes for it to dry, and then applied a powder shadow on top. I decided to go in with a similar shimmery rose shade on top and a matte colour for the crease. For the most part, the liquid eye shadow worked well as a primer and base for the shimmery shade, but not for the matte shade. The shimmer from the liquid eye shadow just spread all over the eyelids and the matte colour became non-existent, giving way for an all-over shimmery look. I did have more success with extending the longevity of the makeup when I used it as a primer rather than a stand alone shadow. It was well into the late afternoon/early evening before I noticed any fading.
However, I would not recommend using this liquid eye shadow as a base if you are not going for an all-over shimmery look. I think this product will work best by first applying my powder shadows and then applying the liquid eye shadow to the centre of the lids, and then blending the edges to make a smoother transition.

As A Highlighter: Since this product worked out to be less metallic and more reflective, I thought I would try it as a highlighter on my cheekbones. Result? I think I might actually enjoy this product more as a highlighter than as an eye shadow. ***** For me, when I applied the product to my cheekbones and blended it out with my finger tips, or my wet beauty sponge, it left a pretty rose highlight. Since the product is easy to blend before it dries, I found that I could customize its intensity as well. I could go from a subtle wash of colour to a more intense rose highlight. Now, since all liquid products tend to move around on my face if not set, I decided to go in with my Mac Soft and Gentle highlighter on top, to set the product and to add more intensity. ***** This duo worked out really well. Not only did applying these two highlighters together help to increase their wear-ability, but it created this beautiful rose highlight, that really gave off a blinding effect. I will definitely be pairing these two together again. ***** Now, if you decide to directly apply the liquid eye shadow it to your cheekbones without blending it out, just know that the pigmentation is quite bold and rich. So use a light-hand when applying, if you do not want a blinding highlight. ***** | E.L.F. Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eye Shadow - Rose Gold (on its own) E.L.F. Yay or Nay?
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this drugstore brand liquid eye shadow performed. As an eye shadow alone and as a primer, it was easy to apply with the wand, blended out nicely and dried down quickly. On its own as an eye shadow, it left a nice hint of colour on my eyelids, there was a bit of creasing but nothing terrible, and it lasted for about 4-5 hours before any fading. As a primer, this shadow worked well to prolong the longevity of the makeup. Yet, unless you are looking to do an all-over shimmery look, I would apply the powder shadows first and then the liquid shadow to the centre of the lids for a specific look.
Now, as a highlighter it was stunning! On its own, it left a nice shimmer on the cheekbones, but as a base for a powder highlighter it was fantastic. Since it has such great blend-ability, you can create various intensities of highlight and customize it to your own preference.
*****
I had to take off a point because E.L.F. promotes this product as having a metallic looking finish. Unfortunately, I did not see a metallic look with the rose gold shade, perhaps the other shades will do better. Like I said previously, there was minimal to no metallic look, more of a shimmer/iridescent look. Also, if you are not careful enough when you are blending out this product , you can definitely blend it out to nothing, leaving just a sheer shimmer. Which is unfortunate, but can be avoided if you pay attention to how far you blend it out.
For me though, this product is a definite YAY! I would definitely buy it again and want to try the other shades.
