Review
I discovered the N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Perfecting Primer when I was doing some research online about the top rated drugstore primers under $20. I wasn't impressed with the last two primers I had tried, and was on the hunt for a new one that would meet my needs and wouldn't break my bank account. This primer was mentioned in quite a few of the articles and blogs I had read about must try items at the drugstore, so I decided to give it a whirl.
*****
First Impressions:
When I first squeezed out the primer from the bottle, I noticed that it was runnier than I had first expected. More of a lotion consistency rather than a primer, and I ended up with more product than I needed. Honestly, a quarter size amount or smaller is all you really need of this product to cover the entirety of the face.
The product itself is a white colour with lots of shimmer. There is no mistaking that this primer will leave your skin with a luminous or dewy finish. When you blend out the product, the white colour appears to become transparent (more on this later), but the shimmer becomes a bit overwhelming, so much so that there is no hiding how reflective this product settles on the skin.
Now, I didn't really notice any strong scents coming from the tube after I opened it. However, once I had the product on my hand and started applying it to my face, I could immediately detect a strong odour. It is an odd smell too, almost like a combination of baby power, soap and a lotion my grandmother might have worn. At first it seems like a mild scent, but after spreading it out on my skin, it really started to build and become quite noticeable. Honestly, the more I had to smell this product, the more I grew to dislike it. After a while, the smell became so strong, that I was counting down the minutes before I could take it off.

Wear and Longevity of Makeup:
When I am choosing a primer these are the results I am looking for; reduces the visibility of pores without clogging them, minimizes fine lines so makeup won't settle, won't dry out skin, and leaves a smooth/blurring effect. For me, I usually try to stay with a mattifying primer, however I am not opposed to a slightly luminous or dewy looking finish depending on the time of the year.
*****
Well, slightly luminous or dewy are not the words I would use to describe the finish of this primer. There is so much shimmer in this product that there is no way I would ever wear this primer on its own. Once blended and dried, this primer made my skin look like a disco ball. I was shinning and shimmery from all angles, and that was only my perspective from inside the house under artificial lights. When I went to the window to see how my face looked in the sunlight, it was even worse. I looked as if I was wearing Halloween makeup, instead of a primer.
On further examination of my face, it looked as if my skin tone had become lighter than normal. It was as if the white tint of the primer hadn't completely absorbed into my skin to become transparent. Instead, the white had just dulled enough to cast a subtle white sheen on my face; making my skin look lighter. Not only was I dealing with the effects of the shimmer, but I now my face appeared paler than normal. The final results of this primer, left my skin looking like one of the vampires from the Twilight books.
*****
On top of my now shimmery vampire like appearance, this primer also did nothing to help minimizing my pores, fine lines and imperfections. Once I had applied my foundation and concealer on top, the makeup just found its way into every fine line and pore. It was as if there was no barrier between my skin and the makeup at all.
*****
What I Did Like:
Apart from the smell, the disco ball shine, visible pores and the pale vampire effect, things weren't all bad with the N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Primer. The primer itself felt lightweight and left my skin feeling moisturized, even with my travels from the warmer indoor to the colder outdoor temperatures. Overall, my face felt smoother than it did before applying the primer, and it did help my makeup last throughout the day. However, by the afternoon I started noticing my skin getting oilier around my t-zone areas, which is normal for me, but it became more accentuated thanks to the shimmer in the primer.

Yay or Nay?
Well, after reading this review I am sure you all know how I feel about this primer; I love it!
Just kidding! I wouldn't recommend this primer to my worst enemy, maybe my mortal enemy, but definitely not my worst or anyone else in this world!
*****
There were just too many negatives things about this product to outweigh the positives for me. On top of looking shinny, shimmery and pale, this primer did nothing to help minimize my pores and fine lines either. While it did help to increase the longevity of my makeup and left my skin feeling smooth, it did not achieve most of my desired results that I am looking for in a primer. On top of that, the smell alone was, and continues to be, enough to turn me against using this product again.
Now with a price tag under $10.00, it is easy to understand why many people are attracted to this product, but honestly don't waste your money. Various drugstore brands are now coming out with their own line of primers at various price points and for different results. Try one of those before coming back to this primer, I know I will.
*****
My official verdict, is a hard Nay! Sorry N.Y.C., I was really hoping to like this primer, because of the great price tag and various recommendations online, but alas we were never meant to be.
